THE MINISTRY OF MENTORING

"Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory" — 1 Thessalonians 2:6-8, 11-12

Everyone needs someone to turn to for direction and spiritual encouragement—a mentor. Parents have that primary responsibility for their children; but spiritually mature adults can also be important influences, as the apostle Paul was to Timothy. You can be that person at a critical time in a young person’s life!

A mentor is someone who comes alongside another individual and builds a relationship characterized by love, trust, and encouragement. The mentor’s primary goal is to help students become wholly devoted followers of Christ.

Great mentors have three important qualities:

1. A Heart for God

  • Have personal relationship with Christ
  • Have a joyful daily walk with the Lord in the Word and prayer
  • Have a desire to continue growing spiritually

2. A Heart for People

  • Demonstrate a burden to help others grow in Christ
  • Demonstrate a willingness to share your life and experiences
  • Demonstrate a desire to be a faithful friend and encourager

3. Relational Skills

  • Be a good listener and encourager
  • Be willing to ask the right questions
  • Be dependable and consistent
  • Be an example through your own lifestyle
  • Be a source of information
  • Be authentic 6
